![]() ![]() Not understanding that shows a lack of understanding of the current state of the business of college sports. Is attendance factor #1 for a coach? Probably not. And more auxiliary revenue (t-shirts, food, billboards, etc.) All of that money helps to pay salaries, build facilities, fund scholarships, and indirectly fund NIL. Which is important for recruiting, and a decent crowd often leads to more fans coming because "it is the place to be." (I know that for some, fewer fans is better as it means "less hassle."). Because most that I have spoken to have a much less simplistic view of things than you are portraying.Īttendance is one piece in a big puzzle. Whenever a coach decides to stay at a university, what you don't see in the statement is "I decided I want to help grow attendance at games." More often than not, financial and family considerations are the reasons.I guess you have spoken to different coaches than I have. The coaches do not worry about that as a factor in the context of deciding between staying at a job or moving to another. So much fun and so exciting.Īttendance is something for Duke as a school and us as fans to worry about. All I know is that at the beginning of this season I saw a type of Duke football I didn't know could exist - a hard-hitting defense and some smash mouth line play. And any coach that can get us to 9 or 10 wins will be grabbed up. I don't see long term success with coaching turnover every 18-30 months. And the big programs love to find the next Football Wizard.ĭuke is stuck in this spot until someone smarter than me finds a solution. The problem is that any coach that is successful at Duke will be seen as a Football Wizard. This is exactly what I was concerned would happen. I'm sure you could go back and find my quotes that were defending Coach Cut - I was wrong. THIS is why many of us have a sour taste in our mouth about our short-term rental of a football coach.I was admittedly on the wrong side of the last Duke football coaching transition. ![]() ![]() Wow! In less than 24 hours, Elko goes from “I’m definitely staying” to “I’m leaving” to “I’m long gone” The flip side of what you're saying is that the "12th man" at A and M is NOT A BIG DEAL nor is the atmosphere in Cameron Indoor Stadium. Whenever a coach decides to stay at a university, what you don't see in the statement is "I decided I want to help grow attendance at games." More often than not, financial and family considerations are the reasons. You can rationalize all you want.but no one wants to coach, or play, in an empty stadium. Having the fortune of knowing some basketball and football coaches, I'll renew my assurance that in consideration of any job they have been offered, none of them stopped to think "I'd stay, but the attendance at games is awful." It's barely even a thought in their mind when deciding whether to take a job elsewhere.Īttendance is something for Duke as a school and us as fans to worry about. I'm not trying to be Debbie Downer here, but I am trying to establish reasonable expectations for what is or isn't possible with our next coach. It's based on decades of TV ratings, attendence, revenues - all of which come with a culture of winning games.Įstablishing a successful football program in five years cannot be the requisite for the next hire - it's unattainable, too much pressure for the next coach, and way WAY out of Duke's price range.Įlko was probably about as close to this ideal coach as we are likely to come, but we didn't have the pieces or money to keep him for two full seasons. Those decisions aren't based on what teams made bowl games last year. If RoseBowl42 is right that the final pieces of conference realignment will slip into place in five years (sounds about right to me, but I'd probably have hedged by saying 5-10) it's going to be nearly impossible for Duke's next coach to create the sea chance necessary to make Duke an attractive football program for on of the bigger conferences. That's like saying the goal in hiring the next 7th grade math teacher is to have kids college ready.ĭuke doesn't have the resources to hire and keep a coach that can position Duke for a move to the Big Ten. I mentioned this on another forum, but the primary job of the next football coach is to position the university well in the next round of realignmentI don't think that's a makeable hire.
